shoot your nails into the ceiling at opposing angles, as to  
paper mate
clinch the moulding to the drywall. also use construction adhesive. if you

You can nail into wall studs & ceiling joists. However ceiling

You may need to look in ur attic & see if that is possible.  
 
I wouldn't say there is a hard rule of width as to when you need it. The  
way you nail it & the straightness of wall & trim will determine how well  
it needs to be held. If only a limited amount of extra support was  
needed, even construction glue to the ceiling drywall would help, but that  
limits the ability expand & contract independently & is less desirable.  
 
Studs & joists do not line up; you will need to find each independently.
